One of the most economically important educational milestones in many countries and in some US states is an exit exam for high school seniors, especially those intent on going to college. Examples include British A-levels, the French Baccalaureate, and the New York State Regents examinations. Since the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act, many US states have also adopted proficiency exams as a requirement for most high school graduates (Thomas S. Dee and Brian A. Jacob 2007).
